Oral and Dental Health

Dental health is part of whole-body health

Bad breath, tartar and chewing difficulty are not merely cosmetic concerns. Periodontal disease, fractured teeth, root disease and oral lesions may cause chronic pain, infection, reduced appetite and weight loss.

Important signs

  • Persistent bad breath
  • Tartar or red, bleeding gums
  • Dropping food or chewing on one side
  • Drooling, pawing at the mouth or facial swelling
  • Broken, discoloured or loose teeth
  • Loss of appetite or body weight
  • Severe oral redness and pain in cats
  • Dental overgrowth, small stools or eye discharge in rabbits

Dental services

  • Detailed oral examination
  • Scaling and polishing under anaesthesia
  • Assessment and extraction of diseased teeth when required
  • Management of fractured teeth and oral lesions
  • Rabbit and rodent incisor and cheek-tooth care
  • Individual home-care planning

Why is anaesthesia often necessary?

A conscious examination shows only part of the mouth. Safe cleaning below the gum line, full assessment and pain-free treatment usually require general anaesthesia. Risk is assessed beforehand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is persistent bad breath normal?

No. Dental disease is common, but kidney and metabolic disorders can also contribute.

Can I trim a rabbit’s teeth at home?

No. Improvised cutting may split the tooth, injure the root and lead to abscess formation.

Dental treatment is planned individually after a complete examination.
